Saving Special Places - Fighting Sprawl - Building Better Communities
1000 Friends of Florida promotes healthy urban and natural places by wise management of growth and change. We educate, advocate, negotiate and, when necessary, litigate to protect our high quality of life. We help citizens have the technical knowledge and access needed to ensure that public and private decisions lead to livable communities. Our planners, attorneys and community activists work to protect natural areas, fight urban sprawl, promote sensible development patterns, and provide affordable housing. Above all, we strive to give citizens the tools to keep Florida's communities livable. Founded in 1986, 1000 Friends of Florida is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization.

Oil Drilling in Florida Waters?

  • HANDS ACROSS THE SAND EVENTS AND RALLIES ACROSS FLORIDA - SATURDAY FEBRUARY 13TH – On Saturday Feb. 13th thousands of Floridians will gather along our coasts at beaches, boat launches, coastal parks and preserves, and near their favorite fishing holes to rally and share opposition against offshore drilling in Florida’s waters. Florida's seaward boundary in the Gulf of Mexico is 3 marine leagues (9 nautical miles) and is 3 nautical miles in the Atlantic.

Evolving Coastal Policy

  • Florida Coastal and Ocean Coalition - The Florida Coastal and Ocean Coalition is a group of environmental, civic, business and outdoor organizations working together to conserve, protect and restore Florida's coastal and marine environment. The Coalition emphasizes the implementation of an ecosystem-based approach to coastal and ocean management, as well as recognition of the important linkage between the health of Florida's economy and the health of its beaches and dunes, coral reefs, mangroves, sea grasses, wetlands and other natural resources.
  • The Blue Frontier Campaign works to promote unity, provide tools to and raise awareness of the solution-oriented marine conservation community.
