Myakka River

The Myakka River flows through Manatee, Sarasota, and Charlotte Counties and expands into the Wilderness Preserve creating the Lower Myakka Lake, with much adjoining land being largely undeveloped or in native range, cow-calf ranches. The tidal river is an important nursery habitat for estuarine and marine species. Various parts of the river are designated as a Florida Wild and Scenic river, an Outstanding Florida Water, and a Florida Aquatic Preserve. The entire basin is a priority water body under Florida's Surface Water Improvement and Management Program (SWIM Program).
