Wildlife Habitat Planning and Best Management Practices for Florida Communities and Landowners

The wildlife project site is located at: www.Floridahabitat.org

1000 Friends of Florida recently received basic funding for a two year project to develop a document addressing "Wildlife Habitat Planning and Best Management Practices for Florida Communities and Landowners" [funding from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) under Florida's State Wildlife Grants Program]. The end product this effort is aimed at producing a Florida-based document targeted to community planners, landscape architects, landowners, developers and active citizens similar to our award winning document, "Protecting Florida's Springs - Land Use Planning Strategies and Best Management Practices" published in 2002.

The first meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee has been set for September 7th in Gainesville Florida where a draft outline to be used in the development of the Wildlife Document will be worked over by a variety of experts. This meeting and the initial efforts to refine the document development outline have received support from the Florida Department of Community Affairs in addition to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Jane's Trust.

Our goal now is to build on this funded project and enhance the effort by incorporating additional tools that will result in a more fully developed product accessible to a wider audience.

There is a particular enhancement, not factor into the original proposal to the FFWCC, for which we are trying to plan and find funding. We hope to plan and hold a mid-project conference to bring together experts in planning, landscape architecture and wildlife protection to help develop the project and germinate potential linkages between these experts.

Description of Desired Project Enhancement
A mid-project conference to bring together experts in planning, landscape architecture and wildlife protection would greatly help to develop the project and germinate potential linkages between these experts (both from a purely informational perspective and from a statewide interest perspective).

All project supporters will be given credit within the final document, on the planned web site and at any conferences or seminars linked to the development of the "Wildlife Habitat Planning and Best Management Practices for Florida Communities and Landowners" project. If the above descriptions of project enhancements fit the type of project your firm or foundation supports please Charles Pattison our Executive Director to discuss (850 222-6277 - ext. 103). We encourage your support to help us make this a great project.

If you or your organization can contribute ideas or resources to this effort please contact Dan Pennington, the project manager.

Note: The Martin Foundation, the Batchelor Foundation and The Dunn Foundation have generously donated funds to allow us work on this wildlife project and to develop a project specific web site and research background information in support for this effort. The wildlife project site is located at: www.Floridahabitat.org and will be evolving rapidly please take the time to check it out and check back in from time-to-time.
