Florida
Panhandle Initiative
1000
Friends of Florida is involved in a four-year
initiative to help communities in the Florida Panhandle identify
planning techniques to preserve critical natural resources in an
economically-viable manner. Our overriding goal is to work with
willing communities to accommodate growth in a manner that is sensitive
to significant natural areas while providing for a sound economy.
We anticipate working with business, government, and environmental
interests to develop partnerships and identify tools and strategies
to achieve this goal.
Funding
for this project has been provided by the Doris Duke Charitable
Foundation. 1000 Friends' work is just one component of a larger
Duke Foundation commitment to the North Florida-South Georgia Region.
For this project we are partnering with The Nature Conservancy,
The Conservation Fund, The Georgia Conservancy, Tall Timbers Research
Station and others.

a Disappearing Lake
by Georgann Penson. When Lake Jackson "disappeared," governmental
agencies jumped in. The Northwest Florida Water Management District,
along with state and local governments, implemented a massive
clean-up plan to restore the lake to its previous ecological health
and to its renown trophy largemouth bass days.

Our
Panhandle Partnerships
To assist in planning
and addressing problems associated with land use and development
and to foster actions that help preserve the area's biodiversity,
1000 Friends of Florida went looking for partners. The partners
we sought were local governments, nonprofits or a combination of
the two. The working objectives of our partnering efforts were to
address particular land planning, conservation or land use issues
that have particular relevance to outcomes that support the principles
of smart growth and affect the protection, maintenance or restoration
of natural systems and the biodiversity these systems support.

County Visioning Project: The goal
of Imagine Jackson is to encourage a representative cross section
of Jackson County citizens to describe a vision of the county that
they want for the future. The plan to accomplish this goal by informing
citizens about Imagine Jackson, stimulate them to be active in the
process, and capture their outlook. Jackson County is one of the
six counties along the Apalachicola River. The work they develop
under this visioning process will hopefully help to recognize and
protect the valuable biodiversity and natural resource base they
share with others in this river basin. The Chipola River, Mariana
Caverns, Merritts Mill Pond and its contributing Blue Springs springshed
are all a part of the greater Apalachicola River basin resources
that are feeling the impacts of development and agricultural/silvicultural
actions.
