CLIMATE CHANGE AND PUBLIC HEALTH WORKSHOPS

The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is holding workshops around the state for county health department staff, other interested health professionals, and community planners to examine the public health related impacts of climate change. Specific input from participants will help the DOH prepare a climate change strategic plan. CEUs for DOH staff have been applied for and may be available.

Dates and Locations

WORKSHOP GOAL AND OBJECTIVES
Goal: Educate and engage public health and community planning stakeholders concerning the effects of climate change on public health and identify promising practices, standards and partnerships to address such effects.

Objectives:

  • Provide an overview of climate change and identified threats to public health.
  • Assess what initiatives are foreseen or underway by county health departments that are addressing climate change.
  • Seek workshop participant input to help prepare a agency strategic plan development and to improve local collaboration.

WHAT DOES CLIMATE CHANGE INCLUDE?
Effects of climate change can include increases in: the number and duration of heat waves; infectious diseases; exposure to air pollution; loss of water resources; and, exposure to severe weather.

DON'T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT…
Leading medical journals, like The Lancet or the New England Journal of Medicine have outlined that climate change currently represents a threat for human health. In fact, The Lancet states that climate change could be called "the threat of the 21st century".

Agenda

9:30-10am: Check In - Coffee with light snack provided

10am: Welcome and Introductions

10:10-10:45am: Overview of Climate Change and Impacts to Public Health

10:45-12pm: Panel Presentations & Interactions

  • Background on DOH initiatives and policies;
  • Public Health effects on climate change in Florida;
  • Built environment factors.

12-1:30pm: Lunch & Networking

1:30-2:50pm: Participant Facilitated Session
Each participant will have the opportunity to move through four facilitated stations to give input on relevant topics regarding actions, activities, programs and opportunities wherein DOH and county health programs can better address climate change related public health issues.

2:50-3pm: Closing Remarks
Forward thinking and any next steps or points of contact

3pm: Adjourn
