Historic Preservation

Preserving a community's historic resources is an integral part of smart growth. Over the years, 1000 Friends has been a strong supporter of historic preservation efforts throughout Florida. Most recently, 1000 Friends has played a key role in disaster planning for Florida's historic resources. Check below for information on the award-winning manual and pilot project.

In previous years, 1000 Friends has been involved in such diverse projects as developing policies and procedures to protect historic bridges, ensuring the preservation of historic resources in Tallahassee's Gaines Street Corridor, and helping the residents of Cocoa uphold historic preservation provisions in their local comprehensive plan.

Disaster Planning for Florida's Historic Resources, With Case Studies -- Prepared in cooperation with the Florida Department of State and Florida Department of Community Affairs, this full-color handbook outlines steps to integrate historic resource protection into the local disaster planning process. It includes case studies on steps Nassau, Palm Beach and Sarasota Counties and the City of Apalachicola took to implement the manual's recommendations. This is an updated version of the award-winning 2003 manual. 2006.

The Need for Disaster Planning for Florida's Historic Resources -- This powerpoint presentation outlines the need for disaster planning for historic resources and steps to take. 2005

Disaster Planning Pilot Project--1000 Friends led a pilot project to implement the strategies outlined in the 2003 manual, Disaster Planning for Florida's Historic Resources, at the local level. Other partners in the new initiative were the Florida Divisions of Historical Resources and Emergency Management, the City of Apalachicola, and Nassau, Palm Beach, and Sarasota Counties. Results were incorporated into the 2006 edition of Disaster Planning for Florida's Historic Resources, With Case Studies.

Save the Great Southern--1000 Friends is assisting with efforts to preserve the Great Southern Hotel in downtown Hollywood's National Register Historic District. 2005.

Bridge Symposium -- This symposium focused on issues associated with the rehabilitation and replacement of historic bridges, in order to develop policy and procedural changes to better meet the goals of preservation. 1999.

Gaines Street Report--As part of the City of Tallahassee's effort to revitalize the historic Gaines Street Corridor, 1000 Friends prepared a report outlining steps to preserve historic resources in that area. 1999
